Beauty Is in the Coat, Not the Clippers

We get asked to shave double-coated dogs all the time. Here's why we usually say no, and what we recommend instead.

A dog's coat is not just fur. It is a layered system that insulates against heat and cold, blocks UV rays, and protects the skin. Shaving a double coat can damage the follicle, change the texture forever, and leave your dog more exposed to sunburn and overheating, not less.

Once a coat is shaved, it can take six months to two years to fully recover. In some breeds it never grows back the same.

The better path is regular deshedding, line brushing, and a proper bath and blow-out. That removes the loose undercoat, lets air move through to the skin, and keeps your dog cool without taking away their natural protection. If you're not sure what your dog's coat needs, ask us at your next visit.
